Impressive! Fort Pickens has been defending the gulf since 1834! The perceived need sprang from the war of 1812. Now who remembers what that was all about? It caused the US to build 40 forts along the east coast & the gulf! The US has done a great job of retrofitting the weapon system here as technology advanced. Guess the location was just too great to abandon! Built by “enslaved African Americans” with over 21 million bricks! The walls are over 4 feet thick. It is really beautiful with all the arches used to support the massive weight of the cannons. The only war time action these cannons had was during the civil war for a two-day battle!
We spent an hour touring the museum & another hour meandering around the fort. The moat has been filled in with sand but the walls are as strong as ever. In 1898 Pensacola Battery was built within the fort. Earth covered concrete was deemed stronger that the bricks. It looks really out of place, a dark ominous presence. The only damage to the fort was when a powder magazine ignited sending bricks a mile & a half across the bay! Fort Pickens was finally abandoned in 1947!
Super Bowl Sunday! Yahoo! We will be able to watch Cam & the Panthers win from the comfort of our Airstream! Our not so healthy snacks have been purchased & we are ready! We will miss our game day ritual. For many years we have celebrated James’ birthday on SBS & partied with the Thompsons, Lathan & James. It will be a quieter game here but we will be together in spirit.
