And what a welcome it was! Torrential downpour, with thunder & lightening, made driving a little too exciting for Edward. Four major wrecks on Interstate 10 around the city of Beaumont added to the thrill. We stopped at the first rest area & got a big kick out of “watch for snakes” sign!
But honestly, we have loved Texas so far. The rain & traffic cleared up after Houston, and we made it to our park by 2:00. The trip west was set up in 200 mile increments to cover some ground but not spend all day in the truck. Stephen F Austin is just west of Houston & ten minutes from I-10! Texas does the state park thing a little different (surprise?) The daily use fee is not waived for campers, so that adds another $10 a day. Perhaps it is their way of encouraging travelers to buy a yearly pass for $70! This park is really wonderful. The campground is in a grassy “bottom” of large sycamores with very spacious full hook-up sites! Lots of trails by the river encouraged us to spend the afternoon rambling around. Definitely will stop here again!
Moving on everyday has its perks – we never have to unhitch, level or do any set-up. Just stow things away inside & we are ready to. San Antonio awaits us tomorrow!
