After a couple of home days around camp, we were ready to drive back into the park. Our destination was The Chisos Basin area, the cooler mountain area of the national park. The road climbs 2000 ft from the desert floor & we could see the temperature dropping! Yea! The mountains are the habitat for the large mammals of the park (bears & lions). The warning signs at the trail head certainly made me nervous. The hike climbed 1100 ft in 2.7 miles & parts of it were pretty steep. The park describes it as moderate & I describe it as evil. After numerous rest stops & many switchbacks we made it to the top with my humor somewhat intact. The views were stunning! Miles & miles of mountains & deserts. Not sure how far into Mexico you can see; seems endless. We had the top all to ourselves so we snacked & hung out a bit. Descending is so much easier on the heart & lungs!
