It is hard to believe that this 788-acre park exists within the small town of Watkins Glen at the southern base of Seneca Lake. Watkins Glen State Park was rated third in a 2015 USA Reader’s Choice poll of 6000 state parks!
Within 2 miles, the Gorge Trail descends 400 ft. through 200 ft. cliffs passing 19 waterfalls. An amazing trail & it is easy to see why it is so popular. It is one of the most accessible gorge trails that we have been on. Big D’s shuttle will drive you to the top of the gorge so a hiker can choose to walk down the 800 steps rather than up & back. That was a wonderful temptation that we succumbed to. I can blame it on my cold, but seriously, after hiking 300+ steps out of Niagara Gorge, 800 seemed horrendous.
This gorge was carved by the same glaciers that formed the mighty Niagara Gorge 12,000 years ago during the last ice age. What a marvelous legacy. It was an otherworldly experience, something out of a Tolkien novel.
