The Cherohala Skyway was finished in 1997. The forty mile stretch cost over $100,000,000 & traverses Graham Co in NC into TN. It is a gorgeous drive &
very popular with motorcycles & sports cars. Must be the twisty hairpin curves! The Smokey Mountains are so beautiful. The Cherokee Nation lived among these hills for over 10,000 years. At one of our worst hours, they were rounded up & moved to Oklahoma. Even our Supreme Court ruled against it! The Cherokee that live here now are descendants of the brave souls that hid or escaped into the mountains they loved.
We hit the jackpot as far as the leaf timing! Today the height of the color change was between 3500-4000 feet in elevation. We began the drive at 1700 ft & reached the maximum elevation (on the highway( of 5390 ft at Santeetlah Gap before descending again to 1774 ft at Indian Boundary Lake.
As always, we took way to many pictures. Obviously, I don't believe if you've seen one mountain, you have seen them all.
On the home front, we frequently are asked "what do you eat?" I think, people think we eat typical camping food all the time. But seriously, this is our life so we eat pretty much what we always have. The challenge & difference is usually the way we cook. Water & its disposal are always an issue. Washing dishes takes a lot of water! We have come up with our dream scenario. Everything gets cooked on the grill. Some things go straight on & others are put into foil packets with herbs & liquid (water, wine, lemon juice). Viola! A wonderful meal with zero cleanup. Well, we do have a little silver wear to wash. But hey, much better & quicker.
