Another glorious day in the NC mountains. This trip has had perfect timing for weather & the fall leaves. The weekend campers left in search of amusement so we had the place to ourselves. Nice!
Camille read in the newest Our State about Tapoco Lodge. Talk about perfect timing! The lodge is about 15 miles from the camp & is quite the destination.
Built in 1930 as part of the hydroelectric effort, Aluminum Co of America used it for company functions for several decades. Reopened as a public inn in 1995, it has become quite popular with the folks who come to drive these mountain curves. Our big pickup is out of place among the muscle cars, convertibles, & motorcycles seeking thrills.
The property has 10 miles of trails & whitewater activities as well. The two mile nature trail was our first choice. Bear Creek Falls sounded nice so up we went. "Nature Trail" usually means easy, frequently paved & often wheelchair accessible. Well, not so! I was climbing on all fours in a number of spots! We were winded, hot & sweaty by end which made that cold beer by the creek all the better. An outdoor patio by a tumbling river & blazing firepits! Who could ask for more? Our wood fired pizza was deliciosa! A perfect setting for an early birthday celebration. Edward turns 68 on Wednesday!
