I miss mom a lot these days. I keep wanting to call her, to share something we've seen or to talk about my art. I can call my mom, but the woman that lives at Davis is not the one I want to talk to. I miss the woman who always put her family first (right or wrong), loved to tell jokes to strangers & baked brownies to thank the guy who changed her oil. The woman who raked leaves at 90 & stubbornly held on to her independence. That's the mama i want to talk with & she is no longer. Children, young or grown, tend to take their parents for granted. We rarely see them as individuals. I wish I had paid more attention.
The rural areas of Central Florida continue to charm us! Naturally diverse in habitats, there is always something new & fun to explore. Florida is the only state we have visited where the old mom & pop motor courts still flourish. Most are well kept; some capitalizing on the retro craze & others more upscale. I love it! Camille & I used to dream of turning one in Carolina Beach into a retirement facility! An enterprising soul in High Springs has created assisted living out of one! Perfect reuse of an American icon.
We have headed east to what we thought was an island near Jacksonville. Well, it is east of Jacksonville, but we are in an area as remote & wild as the Outer Banks! It is fabulous! Our campsite is on the edge of a grove by the marsh. The beach was wild & windy yesterday, with fabulous cloud structure. Clearer skies & warmer temperatures are forecast for our adventures today.
