Being the “nature types”, we have only visited ive cities in our year of travelling. Out of Charleston, Savannah, or New Orleans, I like St. Augs the best. It has a wonderful southern-Spanish-coastal thing going on that really appeals to me.
We like to begin our urban exploration with the hop on – hop off trolleys. Seems every tourist town has one. It is a fun way to see the highlights & learn a bit about the city’s history. Each driver has their own style & own stories, so there is some luck involved.
My favorite tidbit of history is the rather awful early 20th century practice of renting prisoners out as labor crews or chain gangs. The prisoners were transported & housed in the large crate wagon for the duration of the job. Twenty men living in that for months on end! Gruesome!!! Five beds & a little pot belly stove. The general population did not approve of this Florida income stream & were likely to aid an escaped convict. Hence, the origin of “home free”.
Edward’s favorite part of the tour is the “old Senator” who lives in the Howard Johnson parking lot. He is over 600 years old & has survived the original Indians, Juan Ponce de Leon, Pedro Menendez, invaders of all nationalities! Have you guessed yet? It’s the tree!
St Augustine has something for everyone to enjoy : history, art, culture, restaurants, & great weather along with gorgeous beaches. Would we come back? You betcha!
