Wekiwa Springs is 7800 acres preserved from the Orlando sprawl! We continue to be grateful of the foresight of those that came before us. They might not have been able to imagine the development of modern day Florida, but they knew these beautiful wild places needed to be preserved & protected. I hope we can be so wise for the generations that follow us.
The campground here is more open, a long leaf forest without the understory of palmettos. Privacy is lost but it is a refreshing change. Maggie certainly enjoys exploring here. A stand of bamboo was growing along yesterday’s trail. A very lovely change, reminding us of our hikes in Hawaii with James. We return to Wekiwa in March & intend to do more exploring of the waterways & spring.
Speaking of Maggie, we celebrated her 11th birthday yesterday! Edward & I have been blessed with a number of great canine companions, but Maggie might be the best. She is so well-mannered & eager to please; we are always surprised when she behaves “like a dog”! She recently lost her composure with an armadillo we encountered on a trail. She was beside herself & could not behave. Edward had to drag her down the path. Funny girl. We hope we have several more years of her company.
